Heavy Metals Removal from Domestic Sewage in Batch Mesocosm Constructed Wetlands using Tropical Wetland Plants

نویسندگان

چکیده

Constructed wetlands are an affordable and reliable green alternative to conventional mechanical systems for treating domestic sewage. This study investigates the potential of 14 tropical wetland plant species removing heavy metals from sewage through bioconcentration factor (BCF), translocation (TF), enrichment (EF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo) using batch mesocosm studies. Plants with BCF > 1 TF classified as phytoextractors, while < phytostabilisers. The results indicate that 11 out magnesium phytostabilisers, 10 calcium no demonstrate ferrum phytoextraction properties. As manganese phytoremediation, only three depicted phytostabilisation (EF) all studied ferum a reference metal in soil samples decreased after phytoremediation experiments, indicating depletion mineral (EF 2). All generally uncontaminated based on Igeo indices. Based factors indices, it is suggested plants may have facilitated removal uptake into tissues roots.

Pollutant removal by Canna Generalis in tropical constructed wetlands for domestic wastewater treatment

Constructed wetlands have not been commonly used in Vietnam due to the lack of information in the selection of proper types of constructed wetlands, type of reeds, design parameters and performance efficiency, in tropical climates. This paper focuses on Canna generalis, which is a common reed and easy to grow both in water and wet land conditions. Two kinds of hybrid constructed wetlan...

Elemental composition of native wetland plants in constructed mesocosm treatment wetlands.

Plants that accumulate a small percentage of metals in constructed treatment wetlands can contribute to remediation of acidic, metal contaminated runoff waters from coal mines or processing areas. We examined root and shoot concentrations of elements in four perennial wetland species over two seasons in mesocosm wetland systems designed to remediate water from a coal pile runoff basin. Deep wet...

Removal of heavy metals from wastewater by a constructed wetland system at Egerton University, Kenya

The use of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment has been proposed as an intermediate technological solution for handling wastewater. The aim of the study was to assess the efficiency of a constructed wetland at Egerton University, Kenya for heavy metals removal from wastewater. The wetland has been used for tertiary treatment of effluent from waste stabilization ponds system since 2007...

Removal of Heavy Metals from Urban Sewage Sludge Using Acidophilic Thiobacillus ferrooxidans

Background & objectives: The presence of heavy metals in urban sewage sludge limits its use as a soil modifier. The purpose of this study was to remove heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) from urban sewage sludge using Acidophilic Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria. Methods: In this experimental study, the sludge samples were collected from Shiraz wastewater treatment plant. Bioleaching tests were...

Study on the Heavy Metals Removal Efficiencies of Constructed Wetlands with Different Substrates

In this study constructed wetlands (CWs) were used to remove three heavy metals (Zn, Cu and Pb). The two tested substrates were made of coke and gravel, respectively. First order dynamic model was appropriate to describe removing of Zn and Cu. The experimental results showed that first dynamic removal rate constants of Zn in CWs with coke and gravel were 0.2326 h and 0.1222 h, respectively. And...
